HEY BLUE! Rules + Age + Governing Body = Confusion.

By Bob Downey, Hanover LL UIC 2014

Some folks lose their mind when they think that a rule has not been enforced correctly during a game.

However, not everyone is aware that rules depend on which organization has issued the rules of play.   Your child may play Little League, York County, American Legion, and or PIAA rules.   Not all ruling bodies have exactly the same rules.

For the baseball organizations mentioned, they basically follow one of the following generally know rule sets:  Official Baseball Rule (aka OBR), National Federation of State High Schools (aka NFHS or Federation), or NCAA.

In addition, local leagues may adopt variations to the ruling bodies set of rules and customize them basis age groups.

Softball can be per ASA, USSSA, PONY, Little League and PIAA.

So, next time you think that a rule has not been enforced correctly during a game, before you call for the umpire’s head, make sure you know the rules that apply to your kids league and age group.
